Forget having to buy some dumb console at the holiday that's impossible to find featuring cords that don't reach the couch, Sega went and set everyone straight by announcing Sega Forever, an iOS and Android platform to deliver the ‘90s straight to your smartphone!

The company that once flaunted "Sega Does What Nintendon't" should blow the layer of human-skin-cell dust off that slogan because this looks radder than a ring stealing hedgehog wearing sneakers. The company says “SEGA® Forever™ is a free and growing classic games collection of nearly every SEGA game ever released from every console era – Master System, Genesis/Mega Drive, Dreamcast, and more."

And it's all freakin' free.

But because nothing is ever actually free, you can pony up $1.99 when you get a game to take out the ads. Of course.

  • Play free
  • Save your game progress
  • Leaderboard -- compete with the world for high scores
  • Controller support -- fully integrated wireless Bluetooth controller support
  • Offline play
  • Games released every month; download them all!

At launch, there will be five titles to download including the already released Sonic the HedgehogComix ZoneAltered BeastKid Chameleon, and Phantasy Star II. Additional titles become available every two weeks after that.

I'm curious to see if they'll be able to make these games work for a touch screen or if it'll force your hand to buy a Bluetooth controller to make it all come together. Games like Final Fantasy being ported for iOS are fine as they lack real-time button pushing/timing to have fun in turn based worlds. Maybe Nintendo is smarter by making a whole new game like Super Mario Run? TBD.

I assume we'll find out, excluding titles as massive as Sonic, most of these games were impossible, poorly coded, and that my childhood wasn't as cool as being an adult and owning power tools, but I also don't like talking to people next to me on the airplane and games like this will solve that last conundrum perfectly.
