Botox All Up In My Jaw

Raise your hand if you've got TMJ issues. The more I chat with people about it, the more common it seems to be. I've got it. A good handful of my family members and friends do as well. Over the past few years the pain has become exponentially worse. I've been wearing a super duper sexy nightguard in my mouth since I was 16 (not the same exact one, that would be gross) and have sought help from any/every expert I can find. I've spent a small fortune on retainers, mouth pieces, acupuncture (which did relieve the pain for about 24 hours after each session), different therapies and nothing has been able to offer me relief for an extended period of time. The last straw for me was an appointment with a "specialist" who charged me a BOAT LOAD of cash only to prescribe me a bunch of sleeping pills and pain killers which I promptly ripped up. Nothing wrong with that stuff when you actually need it, but I have enough problems focusing-- aint nobody wanna listen to me on the radio on painkillers.

Signs and symptoms of TMJ disorders:

Pain or tenderness of your jaw

Pain in one or both of the temporomandibular joints

Aching pain in and around your ear

Difficulty chewing or pain while chewing

Aching facial pain

Locking of the joint, making it difficult to open or close your mouth

I've got all that... and stress worsens it BIG TIME. So today I'm doing something that has me biting all of my nails off in anticipation: Botox injections in my TMJ muscles. I've never gotten Botox before (despite the many comments/suggestions when I post photos where I'm laughing and my forehead is all wrinkled up) OR even considered that it might help this particular problem. I spoke with a wonderful neurologist I met in Aventura and he went over MANY cases he's helped with Botox. He believes it can help me as well. Sooooo, we're gonna give this a whirl. I'm anxious. CRAZY ANXIOUS. But also SO excited by the possibility of ACTUAL relief from the constant pain.

Fingers crossed! I'll keep you posted. If you've ever received Botox for TMJ related pain I would LOVE to hear from you (the sooner, the better) @itsdeenalang on Twitter and Instagram. Please share your experience with my nervous Nelly self and let me know whether it worked for you

Have an awesome weekend!!
