Study reveals oil spill that began 15 years ago is up to a thousand times worse than estimated

380 to 4,500 gallons of oil leak into the the Gulf of Mexico each day

15 years ago, oil from a Taylor Energy Company rig began leaking into the Gulf of Mexico. The report, written by scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and one at Florida State University, says the amount of oil spilling into the ocean is up to 1,000 times more than the rig owner estimated.

They estimate that 380 to 4,500 gallons of oil are flowing at the site, which was damaged in 2004 by Hurricane Ivan. Taylor Energy Company said it was less than three gallons a day.
