New research published in Current Biology suggests that grey seals are exceptional vocalists. In a series of tests, they demonstrated the incredible ability to copy simple melodies, far more than seemingly any other mammal.

The study involved three young grey seals: Gandalf, a male, and Zola and Janice, two females.

The study also claims that grey seals can mimic some human speech sounds, and generate noises outside their normal vocal range, in a manner similar to humans.
