Orangutan granted personhood settles into new Florida home

The 33-yr-old orangutan, Sandra is entitled to some legal rights enjoyed by people.

An orangutan named Sandra is Florida's newest "Florida-Woman". Well... kinda.

In 2015, a judge in Argentina ruled Sandra is a non-human person and granted her legal personhood, entitling her to some legal rights enjoyed by people, and better living conditions.

Sandra has had quite the journey... She was born in Germany, then spent 25 years at the Buenos Aires Zoo before arriving in central Florida on November 5th. She's settling into her new digs, joining 21 orangutans and 31 chimpanzees who've rescued or retired from circuses, stage shows and the exotic pet trade.
